Just bought your new home? Here are some tips to help with the exciting bit.. painting! - 19th November 2015

1.Clean the walls!

This is a definite must, don't just go throwing paint up, we know you are excited but you'll be glad you've done it once the paint is on and it looks flawless!

2. Skip the paint swatches

Pick up some tester pots of the colours you have in mind, go a few shades lighter and a few shades darker then what you imagined. Paint a bit of each onto an area of wall and leave it a few days, see how it fits with the furniture and the light in the room.

3. Painting in a straight line is not always the best way to go

A great way of getting an even coat is to paint in a W formation, then fill in the gaps. This helps to distribte the bulk of the paint accross the most of the spaces so no one area is too thick.

4. Lip balm and vaseline are your friends!

An amazing trick for painting around windows is to use lip balm, if you apply lip balm on the glass pane of your window or round the areas youll be painting the trim, if you should get paint on the pain you can easily wash it off! Make sure aswell to use sandwhich bags around door knobs to protect them and vaseline on hinges!

5. White primer is not always the best

If you have deicded to paint a darker colour on your walls then use a primer tinted towards the new colour, it will help you to achieve the best covereage with less coats of paint. Also bare in mind whether you want to use a primer with stain block built in and whether you go for an oil based or water based primer! Stain block is essential for painting high traffic areas like kitchens or bathrooms!

6. Dont suffer through the fumes!

If you dont like the smell associated with the pain add a drop or two of vanilla extract into each paint tin, this will transform the smell into a much more pleasan aroma!
